Nope. "note off" is normally beginning with 8 (8n.xx.yy), while notes on begins with a 9 (9n.xx.yy). But maybe note on with 0 vel is more often used, i don't own every single keyboard on the market ^^

I can confirm that the EWI (usb, at least) sends "note" messages. But only note on. "note off" messages from the ewi are "note on" with velocity at 0.

Yep. I think the only differences, besides one being usb, and the other, midi, is the fact that the ewi usb is cheaper, has only 4 octave rollers, and no portamento switch (which is useless anyway for a keyboard player)

But when you only do it with the airflow, you lack the small pitch change which is necessary to make a credible vibrato. I use to try to do it that way too, but i'm converted to bite, now ^^ That's, of course, only my personal opinion.
