Stuck notes with an "Ewi + keyboard" setting [Cubase 7 bug]

edited February 2013 in General Questions
Hi Samplemodeling team !

I'm experiencing stuck notes in cubase 7, when i play on a keyboard with my ewi usb as a "breathcontroller" (i filter all the notes coming from the ewi). Since i'm a pianist, and not a wind player, it's a nice way to have the best of the two worlds, but...

I have a lot of stuck notes in cubase, especially with the swam instruments (kontakt based too, but i can "unstuck" the note by playing it again, which doesn't work with swam engine).

I don't have any stuck notes if i play your instrument with only my keyboard, or only my ewi usb. It happens only when i "mix" them. Don't have any stuck notes on cantabile lite either.

I know it kinda sound like a cubase problem, but since the swam guy doesn't show the stuck note in its virtual keyboard (it doesn't show like a normal note being pressed), maybe there is something you can do ?

Because, as you know, cubase report system is... Well... You have to give a reproduction method inside cubase which works all the time. My problem is that i get some stuck notes with a keyboard + ewi usb + samplemodeling instruments...

I'm going to ask them but I still think you're my best shot ^^

I was using Cubase for many years and recently switched to Reaper due to similar issues. Latest versions of Cubase are bloated and don't give enough CPU priority to VSTi instruments. I can record 3 VSTi at same time in Reaper with no issues, where Cubase breaks even with one instrument. You can try Reaper for free trial and it is also cheap to buy.

Also i recommend you make sure you disable all power saving options in your system bios, they tend to create issues on windows machines when recording audio, especially on new intel CPUs.

Thx for the reply. I'd like not to switch from cubase to reaper right away, even if i'm considering it in the future ^^. The thing is, i have a big orchestral setup, and i don't want to switch unless i'm absolutely sure it's necessary.

Since i'm hosting all my vstis into vienna ensemble pro instances, I think they have their "own" cpu priority, so maybe it's why cubase "cpu management" has never been a problem to me.

I'll look into my bios settings, but i'm pretty sure i have already disabled power saving options. But thx for the tip, i didn't know.

To be more precise, stuck notes seems to happen only when i try to bite the ewi... Really a weird bug. As long as I don't bite, nothing wrong. (my bite is currently setup on pitchbend).

Can you have stuck notes if you receive some pitchbend informations via CC2 without any notes pressed (which is impossible with a breatcontroller, since it always needs a note to send informations)

EDIT : actually, i was wrong, it also happens only when i blow. It seems to happen more often on big projects, so maybe it's linked to the asio charge or the processor, i don't know.

Ok last detail : when i get a stuck note, i usually have a silent one before or after (not sure). And actually, the stuck note is visible in the virtual keyboard just after appearing. But if i try to "unstuck it" by pressing it again, it disappears from the virtual keyboard, but is still stuck.

Another thing: if click on a visible stuck note in the virtual keyboard, it stays visible. It's only if i press the stuck note on my real keyboard that it's not visible anymore (I can still hear it though...).

The only way to stop it is to "play/stop" in cubase.

Ok, i manage to reproduce the bug without the ewi, using my FCB1010 to control the dynamic. It seems cubase 7 does not like multiple midi inputs.

    I've written a novel by myself :p

I manage to get rid of the stuck notes by merging every midi instruments i use into one midi port, so that, from a cubase point of view, everything is coming from a single instrument...

    And it works...

Always nice to pay a software update several hundreds box to have these kind of "new" features...
  • Hi Plougot,

this is something very particular and we never received any reports like this one. The only way to reproduce this problem is to create a MIDI file... Please send us a few notes demonstrating the problem in a simple .mid file. This is the only way to nail the problem - provided that it is reproducible here on our systems.

However, please use the Contact page for further clarification. Your problem is something apparently related to your particular setup only, so please use rather our support line than the Forum...

As soon as we get the MIDI, our programmer will have a thorough look and will contact you.

    Thank you.

Thx, but i've nailed it pretty close, and now, i'm sure 100% that the problem is not coming from your side.

I cannot send a midi file, since it only occurs if I play live on several midi instruments at the same time (ex: fcb1010 + keyboard, or ewi + keyboard).

But my workaround (merging all the midi data into one midi port before sending them in cubase) works fine. Which means the problem is not on your side at all... I can still contact you if you're interested, but i doubt you'll be able to debug cubase :p ^^

    Hello:

I'm getting stuck notes too. I'm playing with a keyboard and a Yamaha BC3 breath controller. However I'm using Studio One as my DAW. I will try to capture this in MIDI.

    Thanks.
