Main Stage 2 Users?

Hello everyone,

I'm using The Trumpet, Trombone and the Sax Bros, for live performances and have been having issues using Main Stage as my AU host.

I'm having the following issues, that I'm hoping someone can shed some insight on:

1. When opening a saved project, the Sax Brothers exhibit some strange behaviors. Specifically, there is no range in dynamics - its either on or off. When you open the Kontakt plug in, the Dynam graph is pegged at about 80-90%, and stays this way until you reset the Kontakt engine.

2. When opening a saved project, The Trumpet doesn't save its mute setting. I've even saved a new instrument in Kontakt that has the mute selected by default, and even this doesn't retain its setting when opening in Main Stage.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I really love and rely on these instruments. I just can't seem to find a AU host that does everything I want!

Justin

  • Hi Justin,

    this is definitely host-related.

Specifically, there is no range in dynamics - its either on or off.

Please explain... Please note that the plugin displays Dynamics which is related to the INCOMING expression value (like CC11). If no expression is sent to the instrument, no bar is shown (and if you start to play, the known expression warning appears). If your plugin shows the dynamics at 90%, it might mean that it receives MIDI expression data of about 115. The questions are: which version of the sax are you using and what is your expression controller?

The Trumpet doesn't save its mute setting.

It definitely does - I even tested it once again. Also here the question: are you using the actual version 2.52?

I would suggest the following workaround: open The Trumpet in the standalone mode of Kontakt, load the mute and store the instrument under another name. Then load the instrument into your host - it must recall the right setting!

Sorry we cannot help more but, as said, this must be a problem of your host...

    Best regards

    Peter,

First off, thank you so much for the reply. I can't tell you how nice it is to post something and get a quick response!

    this is definitely host-related.

I completely agree - I am hoping that perhaps someone here is using one of the instruments with Main Stage. I've used other AU hosts, but none have either of the issues I've posted about above. Needless to say I'm a little confused why this host is different.

    Regarding the questions you asked:

    Sax
The questions are: which version of the sax are you using
    1.51

and what is your expression controller?
    Akai EWI USB

    Trumpet Mute

are you using the actual version 2.52?
    Yes

I had actually tried this previously, and here's the REALLY strange thing...the mute setting goes back to "none" when it gets loaded in Main Stage. If you load it in Kontakt (or a few other hosts I tried), it works perfectly.

I realize there probably isn't an answer that you can give me on either of these, but I figured it would be worth posting on the off chance someone else has the same issue.

    Thank you again-

I've figured out part of the problem for the dynamics issue described above. (either all on, or all off)

Peter can probably explain why this only affects the Sax products and not the Trumpet or Trombone, but the problem is with how MainStage treats CC11.

To fix it, select the channel with a Mr Sax product on it, and select Midi Input in the Patch Inspector. Under controllers, change the Input to "Breath (2)" and viola!

This appears unnecessary with The Trumpet and The Trombone.

You will now notice in the Channel Strips that the expression dial now is controlled by the EWI.

    Hope this helps someone else!

I've figured out the mute issue and have a theory as to why.

First, my theory as to why this happens. (even if this isn't the reason, the fix still works).

I believe when Main Stage loads the AU, it sends out a CC100 of 0. This overrides the mute setting in in Kontakt, even if you've created a saved version of The Trumpet with the mute defaulted to on.

The fix is very easy. In Edit mode in Main Stage, create a New Assignment in the "Assignment and Mapping" tab. Select the new assignment, and below switch to the tab that says "Unmapped." Below that, select the channel you have the trumpet loaded on, in the next screen select "Midi Controller", then scroll down to (100 (Reg.Par LSB)". Change the Saved Value to the appropriate number for the mute you want. Page 13 of the manual has the numbers, but for the manual-phobic out there, the numbers are:

The Manual wrote: MIDI-loadable mutes. Loaded mutes are: “None” (default) (for CC100 between 0 and 21), “Straight (22-42) , “Cup” (43-63), “Bucket” (64-85), “Harmon” (86-106), “Harmon + stem” (107- 127).

    Enjoy!

Thank you for this useful post. Had similar issue in Mainstage 3 where the mutes didn't load and your mapping instructions solved it.

    Thanks!
