First recording after swam tenor update

edited November 2013 in User demos
I like the SWAM tenor 2.1.0 update. I find some transitions sound much more realistic. I also tweaked some settings differently. Let me know what you think of this preset:

    Kobi,

Nice. Would you mind sharing your settings?

    Thanks,

Sure. Here is my latest SWAM preset for tenor sax 2.1.0:

When I use this preset, there are some external plugins used to limit CC17 (controls in this preset vibrato depth and rate) to max value of 70.

I also limit range of CC16 (controls growl) from 7 to 127 - That way I can increase growl, but have minimum value of 7, which creates nicer tone and transitions.

Limiting range of CC can be done with internal plugins of most DAW, but the free Insert Piz MidiConverter3 (http://www.thepiz.org/plugins/) is more flexible.

The only paid plugin used is the Reverberate reverb (http://www.liquidsonics.com/software_reverberate.htm) which is very affordable and the only convolution reverb I found that was completely reliable and stable for live zero latency playing and sounded great.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I just added in the folder another preset (v8) with nicer high octaves and a bit softer tone (inspired by Stan Getz).

As an Apple user you can't try it, but I am going to create a sage-setup around the Brainspawn "Forte" software. This is a very versatile VST-host, that is not a DAW, and thus more suitable for live performance as an unattended "embedded" system. (See my other post to you...)

I am rather sure that same can tweak midi signals in the way you describe.

    Hi Michael,

You can also use Reaper DAW on OS X. Free to trial fully functional version and very cheap to buy. I use it on my Win 7 64 bit laptop for live gigs and it is very flexible with macros and extensions and rock solid stable and reliable. Works great with all 64 bit and 32 bit VST and It allows me to tweak every instrument and quickly switch instruments and settings with one click on keyboard or via midi. Since Reaper is also fully featured DAW, I can record and edit multi track audio and midi right on top the live multi setup project, without having two different setups.

    Thanks for that hint.

In fact I already used Reaper (once) to edit a combination of sound and video, and as my wife professionally does Websites for her clients and video sometimes is requested, I plan to buy Reaper once I need to do video/audio editing on that behalf.

I did not suppose that Reaper would be a good idea to use as a pure VST host for "embedded" live performance equipment. But I'll try as soon as I get the hardware.

I assumed that you would use a Mac on stage but as you are on Windows, as well, you might want to test Forte, which is dedicated or that issue (Midi and audio routing between instrument and effect VSTs), and they do have a free trial version that runs for an hour and needs a screen input when starting, but no functional limitation.

Here is a recording using v8 Getz style preset:

The first piece is great. Very nice tone and settings on the sax!

I also love the reverb too. The room placement is perfect & makes it sound like it was recorded in an actual acoustic space.

To my ears - rather untrained to wind instruments - the sax sounds completely natural, for me indistinguishable from a real reed instrument.

But the flute is a bit odd. I can't tell whether it's the sound or the intonation (that of course in nature is created by a different "feel" on the flue than on the soprano-sax-like WX.

Maybe it's time for SampleModeling to create a Swam Flute that cures either or both problems.

Thanks! I am also looking forward for a SM flutes and hope it will be in SWAM engine, since I find it much easier to customize preset than Kontakt.

... And moreover it is obvious that for an instrument with a complex realtime-variable sound spectrum such as a transverse flute (and of course especially a sax) physical modeling is prone to provide a much more natural impression than any (rather) pure sampling can do.

A swamp flute is bound to be great when played appropriately :D
