Very quiet and 'CC11 not yet received' error

Hi,



Really looking forward to getting into this instrument, but I've just installed and registered/activated it and it's incredibly quiet - the volume is at it's highest in the Kontakt 2 player and all other volumes are fine.



There's an error message that says:



'Warning: CC11 not received yet. The instrument will not work properly!'



Might that be to do with it? I doubt it considering that's mainly used for automation data right?



My set up is a Mac Book Pro 2ghz 2gig RAM running Logic 8.0.2 Studio. I'm using a M-Audio Keystation 49e as well.

    Cato,



    we strongly recommend to read the User Manual. We even wrote - for impatient users - the Quick Start, which is the absolute minimum (just one page or so) which must be read before even briefly trying The Trumpet.

    It´s NOT an error message - it´s only a reminder that you cannot play without initialising the instrument by sending the CC11 controller data. It´s essential for the proper work of the instrument - CC11 controlls the dynamics. It´s like steering wheel in a car: you can drive without it, but just a few meters, without any control... :-)



    If you don´t have any external physical controller which might be assigned to CC11, you have to create a controller track in you sequencer and send it to the instrument. For a very brief test you can also remap the CC1 to CC11 (see the Manual...) - doing so you can control the dynamics with the ModWheel. However, in this case you won´t be able to control the vibrato, since CC1 is responsible for the vibrato depth.



    Please note that a certain minimal amount of controllers is necessary to play an expressive and realistic instrument like The Trumpet.

    And please, don´t forget the manual - you will love the instrument after learning a bit more about it... :-)

    Ok, having read through the quickstart and main manual I see that you re-assign the CC11 controller within Kontakt 2 Player.



    However, I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e which is the most basic of keyboards - it has pitch bend, mod wheel and a volume slider, but that's about it. Plus, there's only 49 keys but there are octave switches meaning I can reach further than just the 4 octaves physically available.



    Does this mean I can't reassign CC11 to something like the volume slider or sustain pedal that I have attached? By reassigning the controller to use CC#1 means I can now play the trumpet, but the keyswitches don't work.



    I understand that you can create a dedicated track for CC11 data, but I don't see anywhere in the manual details on how to do that - can anyone point me to the right place?

    I believe you could assign CC11 to the volume slider, provided that it outputs CC7. In the drop-down menu select CC remapping. Set Controller to use for CC#11 to CC#7. You might also have to open the Instrument Option dialog panel, go to controller, and check the box "accept standard controllers for volume and pan". Please try with this box either unchecked and checked.

    Thanks for the tip Giorgio - unfortunately mapping to CC7 doesn't let me use the volume slider on my keyboard, but remapping to CC1 allows me to use my mod wheel successfully and I've realised how subtle some of the keyswitches are now - it's a wonderfully expressive instrument, having great fun playing around with it.



    Just a couple of questions before I go off and write an incredible piece of music :) : How would I go about getting the 'squealing' effect at around 6-7 seconds of the C-section demo and how would I play a longer end vibrato? It seems pressing F1 and F1# might be a bit short for some compositions I have in mind.

    Unfortunately, there is no C-section. I will have a look and try to find it. But as far as I remember - this is a shake played either as a minor third (or full-step)-fortissimo trill with a rather low velocity, or using the maximal setting of the CC1. Please try both.



    As far as the end vibrato is concerned - well, this very characteristic ending works mostly within a limited time/rate. I mean - a kind of "slow motion vibrato ending" won´t sound very good. But you can either try to get something similar using a short portion of vibrato (CC1) or you can also draw appropriate curves in your sequencer (pitch and dynamics). Please have a look at the exmaple MIDI files, which perfectly show the "anatomy" of that type of articulations. The timing is then totally in your hands.
