Soft tonguing problem

edited March 2012 in General Questions
When I play the first note of a legato phrase with my EWI the tonguing noise is quite loud, even when I don't tongue at all. All successive notes (which I tongue as usual) sound fine. The trouble is that when I add reverb, this first tonguing noise really sticks out, and makes the instrument sound very close. In the real world this sound doesn't carry, so it makes the instrument sound strange. Is it possible to reduce this noise with one of the controllers, or is it something that would require an update?

I have the same problem here, I usually select "breath controller instead of wind controller in the instrument options panel, hope this works for you too. LMK.
  • Daryl,

I will willingly check it, but... you don´t even mention what instrument you mean :-) It´s essential whether a sax or brass.

Sorry, I was talking about the French Horn. I assumed that everyone would know what I was working on in my studio. Talk about thinking that I'm the centre of the universe.
  • I see... OK, here is my first hypothesis:

as we know wind controller devices do not have a completely independent control over the velocity as a keyboard does. I mean - the velocity is either set to a fixed value, or derived from the Expression (CC2). This is, of course, a certain limitation. Moreover, as we know, one needs much lower air pressure to play EWI, compared to a real instrument. This means: it is relatively easy to create effortlessly a strong, extremely steep CC2 burst, which leads to an extremely strong attack. On the other hand, playing a legato might be (depending on your setting) controlled by CC5 set to a medium value. This would explain your natural, "normal" legato transition.

We would appreciate if you could provide us some more information:

    - What velocity does your EWI send? Is it fixed (how much)? Or is it bound to the intensity you play?

    - what are the settings in the Menu "Portamento"?

    - could you please play a few notes demonstrating the "tonguing" you mentioned, and send us as a mid-file? This would make the investigation much easier.

    Thank you very much!
