Ensemble Strings CC99 Expr Vib problem with Logic and VEP6

SM Ensemble Strings (V.1.0.1) use CC99 for Expressive Vibrato control. That control works fine when the library is loaded into Kontakt 6 from within Logic 10.4.4 (MacOS High Sierra). However, when Logic connects to a Vienna Ensemble Pro 6 instance with Kontakt and the Strings loaded as AU plugin (Midi Port 1, Ch 1), this specific control fails. The CC99 control knob does not move, and other controls (I tested CC1) now have non-linear response with sudden leaps.

This is probably caused by the controller number CC99, which also serves as Midi port selector in Logic (a poorly documented feature of VEP6). The workaround is to reassign the Expr Vibrato to a different CC number (such as CC96). When updating this wonderful string library please consider to remove this unfortunate coincidence and change the default CC99 assignment. Thanks!

  • IMHO, it's not a good idea to py too much attention on dedicated software products that seemingly don't correctly adhere to the VST standard ("poorly documented feature of VEP6"). I think providing an appropriate usage note on might be enough.
