SM Strings performance compared to SM Brass?

Hey there,

I am curious about the performance of SM Strings compared to SM Brass. Are the strings more CPU intense or maybe less? Or equal? Thanks for your help!

All the best,

    Tagirijus,

We carefully tested the CPU load, both average and real-time peak, of Brass (FrenchHorn) and Strings (Viola), Solo and Ensemble, single note vs. run. My system is a normal PC, I7, Windows 7. I loaded the instruments on two Cubase 8.5 tracks, and created a simple sequence with a long sustain followed by a fast run. The same, record-enabled track was used for FrenchHorn and Viola, solo & ensemble. The Cubase VST performance tool was used to evaluate the CPU load. A screenshot was taken when the the graph looked reasonably stable.

The results (see the enclosed graph) show that for Solo instruments the CPU load was basically the same for Brass and Strings. The CPU load (both peak and average) of Ensemble Strings was lower (up to 30%) than that of the Brass.

    Hope it helps,

    Giorgio

  • Hey Giorgio,

thank you very much for the effort testign and comparing the CPU usage of SM Brass and SM Strings. This looks so promising, wow! Have a nice day. (=

    All the best,

  • You're welcome :-)
