Webcam as midi controller

To be useful, a "hand position" sensor would need to safely detect at least three parameters: x, y, height in an appropriately wide mechanical range (come 50 cm).

I doubt that this is doable with an off-the-shelf webcam.

    Hmm.

The Video does not relieve what exactly the three sensors resolve. "X" and "Y" seem to be tilt forwards/backwards, and left/right. I did not find out what exactly "Z" is supposed to be (seemingly something like acceleration). "Height" would be useful but regarding to what would the ring be able to measure it ?

Moreover the video does not show any "accurate" controlling of any sound parameter but just "making fun" with something that to my understanding is not something that can be called "music", as most of it is just created by a self-running algorithm.

A video controlling a decent virtual instrument would be a lot more instructive. For "Leap Motion" (that indeed features linear - not angular - X / Y / Z control) we do have some of those.
