New user Trumpet /Sax
Hi Everybody,
I am new to "The Trumpet" and Mr. Sax.I have been a long time weekend woodwind player playing a variety of music mainly R&R, Blues and a little Jazz. About 5 years ago I started playing the WX5, and briefly the EWI. Now I play the magical Synthophone. I never thought I would see the day when soft synths would peak my interest like these have. Not to mention buying them and planning the purchase of a Laptop or portable PC. I have only used hardware and I am not technically savy with midi.

I have been giving the T and Mr S a test. Overall my first impressions are very good of Mr. Sax. This is compared to my use of a Synthophone with the Yamaha VL70m with Turbo Chip. I felt the saxes, and especially for me the Mbrecker patch was the most realistic thing going. Now I will have to say the Sample Modeling team has done a great job of providing a new tool for us windcontroller players.
Mr Sax performs very well at 48KHZ at 7 ms latency. My current system is a custom 3 ghz Pentium 4 with 4 GB memory (3 1/2) recognized.
The Trumpet does OK at 10ms with a few glitches. I am not sure if this is PC related or setup related yet. I still need to play with the controllers. A layer with the Trumpet and Sax sounded great to my ears. VERY REALISTIC. The Trumpet in Solo mode still needs work on my part.
Ok I suspect the EWI and the WX5 are similar in the setup of a basic Trumpet. Has anyone made a list of a basic setup. I am reasonably happy with it but it seems the attack is rather inconsistent in volume.
I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes on. I have read the posts in this forum and I didn't see such a setup but if it has been done already I apologize.
Thanks to Giorgo, Peter and the team that put these marvelous instruments together .
Best regards,
Bob Hunt

I still have some computer issues though. The Sax works without any problems. It seems I will have to do some maintenance on my system to optimize for the Trumpet. I have seen where others have had the same problem in that at first the Trumpet works well and then after awhile everything is degraded.
Can you give me an information about Event Queues? (Engine menu)
This numbers remain stable or progressively increase?
Thanks.

Thanks for trying to help. I think at least for now I am making improvements. During installation the directions suggested having the libraries on a separate drive. When I tried to do that it fragmented the program files into to many directory paths (I Think) Any way I deleted the duplicate files and put everything under one main directory on the main drive . That seemed to improve the CPU load. I am playing successfully with both the Trumpet and sax but I am getting some artifacts from the Trumpet.
Buffer is 512
Channel Buffer is 120KB
DFD Memory Required is 60
CPU Overload protection is relaxed
Creative ASIO Latency is 10ms
SR is 4800 (this matches the setting for the creative soundcard)
So far with the Trumpet the only settings changed is the CC Mapping is set to 2 for Dynamics and the breath control is activated. (the Windcontroller seemed to slugish to me)
In Mr Sax the SR is 4800
Dynamic pitch is set to 4
P.T. is at 127
K.N. is set to 0
I am using Smooth Attack Hard

I finally figured out what you meant when you said check the engine. I thought you meant the audio engine. I see in the left column where there is the Engine tab. I have been playing off and on since I first posted tonight. Unfortunately the trumpet is giving me fits. After playing for a few minutes the CPU load goes up from about 30-50% to 100% . Now when I mute the trumpet and only play the Sax the CPU drops way back .
Voice memory stays close to 4GB on sax but it jumps to about 16 with trumpet.
Note Events are 0-13/8192 for Sax and 0-28/8192 on trumpet
CPU usage is average 13-16% on sax with a peak of about 25% And the trumpet starts out at 30-50% but eventually climbs to 100% and it freaks out .
About Sax, my council is to set the DynPitch at least at 10 otherwise you can not generate an optimal vibrato, and to set the Sample Rate to 88.2 (if your system can support...). So the quality is much better.
About the CPU problem, please email through our contact page. We will certainly help to identify what the problem is.

Just wanted to say hello, I saw your youtube videos, for me they are the only good reason to buying a synthophone

Hi Stefano,
sorry for chiming in but I would also be interested in the best way to produce a vibrato. It makes sense to me to raise the DynPitch a little bit, I´ll give it a try tonight. Does it really make a big (audible) difference to use 88.2 MHz instead of 44.2? If yes I´ll give it a try but I´m afraid it will double the feasible latency on my MacBook Pro (using an RME audio interface).
The pitchbend vibrato produced by the Akai EWI is quite nice and controllable (you can adjust sensitivity of the bite sensor via software). It would be nice though to have a GUI controllable sensitivity controller similar to the one used in The Trumpet. Just a thought for an upcoming update.
BTW: I had the impression that the portamento can´t be downregulated enough and there is still quite some slur when playing legato even with the portamento turned to zero. Am I mislead or is this a bug. Can you give some advice how to adjust and control portamento?
Thanks very much

Thanks and hello to you Jorgito. The Synthophone really offers a windcontoller player many functions and options. I feel free while playing. I don't have to think about function only the music. It is idealy suited to Saxophone players . I love it because I can practice my Alto and the Synthophone Interchangeably as far as fingerings. The embouchure is another story. I am hoping to get to the same level and beyond with Mr Sax and The Trumpet that I can achieve with the VL70m's.
About Sample Rate :
In the User Demo Thread there is a topic where I posted an audio example :
http://www.samplemodeling.com/forum/download/file.php?id=57
About latency:
Usually doubling the sampling rate produces a halving of latency.
Example: in my system, the latency with a buffer size of 512kb is 12ms at 44.1kHz and 6ms at 88.2 . Naturally the CPU usage increase. My council is to set 88.2 at least during export, or in "StandAlone" (remember to match with the SR in the GUI and reload instrument everytime you change the SR).
About Vibrato :
DynPitch produce Vibrato during Dynamic changement like Vibrato by Breath or by CC1 (keyboard mode). If set at minimum instead of vibrato you'll have only tremolo effect.
About Portamento:
Fixed in the next version.

thanks for the reply. I´ll try your suggestions though I can´t hear the slightest difference between 44.1 and 88.2 MHz listening to the linked audio examples . I´m pretty sure it´s either due to my impaired hearing or the mp3-compression. I would presume it´s the latter 8-)
