soundcard again

edited January 2009 in General Questions
Hi, hope the team are still talking to me  I know I over reacted when the sax didn't do all I initially wanted  sorry!!!

I have now got the sax working with vista and my built in soundcard (sr 48000) with an exceptable 10ms latency, however I still want to upgrade my soundcard to get the best out of the already impressive Mr T.

I know I was advised amongst other soundcards about the M-audio fast track pro, however I note for a little extra I can get the fast track ultra, which has usb 2.0 rather than 1.1.

Any thoughts on whether this "Ultra" would be better than the "Pro" or is there anything better around for the price of up to or a little more than the "Ultra" or would I be just as well to get the "Pro"? as I only need the card for live playback of Mr T and the Trumpet.

Regards pete.

    Hi Pete,

Your first impression was apparently unfounded. We are happy about that.

As to your question, what I know is that the Ultra version offers 6 in/out channels, 4 mic preamps and an internal DSP providing reverb/echo effects. If this is what you need, go for it.

If you only need the audio card for live playback, then the Pro version should be adequate.

    Best,

    Yes you've done a great job :)

Thanks for the info, if the Usb 2 offers no advantage, for my simple needs, the "Pro" will do.

    Hello pgill

Have you checked the latency of this audio card in some hardware forum ?

Sometimes with usb 1.1 the latency is high...

No, but Giorgio has used the "Pro" and knows the requirements for Mr T and the trumpet.

I had thought 1.1 should be ample to carry midi data from a windcontroller in one direction and an audio signal in the opposite direction, I can't imagine Usb being slower than midi or audio cables (which will inevitably be in the circuit), but just wanted to check.

Also I wanted to see if there were other advantages, as regards performance, other than the added features of the "Ultra" which i don't actually require.

    Regards Pete.

    Ok

I only wanted to help ;)

Concerning my system i have an Inspire 1394 from Presonus that works fine (cheap but good quality) on PC & MAC but that needs additionnal USB MIDI interface.
  • Pete, Valouz,

On my M-Audio Fast Track Pro, the minimum latency (buffer size = 128) is 4-5 msec at 44 kHz, and 2 msec at 88 kHz. This should be sufficient for most applications.

    Thanks for helping :-)

    Best,

    Giorgio

Thanks Valouz, I did understand that  Sorry if my reply didn't express that.

And thanks Giorgio, I suppose I'll have to ensure that the next song I write spans more than 2 ms

    Regards Pete.
