A bug in The Trumpet ?
Hi guys,
got The Trumpet yesterday and before i overwhelm you with compliments, i have (unfortunately) one thing to report that seems to me like a bug.
The problem i am experiencing is that playback of notes starts already when i press a key, without blowing into the breath controller... low in volume, but noticeable.
The setup/calibration of the breathcontroller has no impact. Even if i select CC11 (instead of CC2; and it is sure that my keyboard does not send CC11) this problem persists.
Now, imagine that this way i am getting "double" attacks for each note when the keypress is slighlty before the breath controller signal (which in my case is around 100% of all notes ;-)
There is also a script warning in the bottom of the kontakt player window, it says "SCRIPT WARNING: array index out of bounds (using default value 0)! Line 263, Program: 0"
Maybe there´s a connection between both things ?
Thanks & best regards
Rudi

No bug here. We are not dealing with a wind controller, do we?. As any keyboard-driven instrument, The Trumpet outputs the note when the key is pressed. Your BC, mapped to CC11, simply substitutes the expression pedal. When not blowing, CC11 remains at zero, and this associates the lowest possible dynamics with the played note.
Thus, the attack is, as described in the manual, dependent on the interaction of note-on velocity and CC11. Please experiment with these concepts, and you will find that everything properly works.
Roberto Soggetti (see the demos) is using a BC3 instead of the expression pedal, and always reported a fully satisfactory behaviour, after a short experience.
I'm sometimes using a BC3 as well, and find it often better than the expression pedal to control the dynamics. But the BC should not be seen and used as a wind controller.
Best,
Giorgio

Hi Rudi, here is my philosophy about BC controlled instruments... they basically fall in two categories, those played by breath and those to be played by fingers. The first kind of instruments (VL70, Wivi ...) produce an attack anytime you blow into the BC; you hold a note, and nothing comes out until you blow your BC. The secont type of VI (like The Trumpet) produce an attack when the key is depressed; so you blow the BC before actually playing the key... you might sustain a long ininterrupted breath even while playing a fast staccato passage. With just a bit of practice it becomes very easy and satisfactory to play this way, it even allows for a better timing when precision is called for. Play it with your fingers... Hope this helps,
Roberto
thanks for your help. Yes, playing around a bit with The Trumpet i can see that the concept is differnet to what i thought...but no problem. My Keyboard skills are something between bad and suck ;-) so I dont play really realtime anyway. Its just that i played "the other way" compared to you, Rob... first the key, THEN the breath...which resulted in a lot of moving midi data around and ...arrgh.. Things i got used playing on the VL1 and WIVI. Now i just use the second mod wheel for expression and that´s a lot better.
Finally a trumpet that also sounds like one... Congratulations !
When are the bones coming ? ;-)
regards,
Rudi
