Noises on big project

edited February 2015 in General Questions
Hi guys,

I would like to have some opinions and maybe some advices.

I own a computer based on I7 3930K (6 cores at 3,2 Ghz) with 64GB RAM

I use windows 7 64 pro and Sonar X3 64 bit

the sound card is RME UCX.

When I use Sample Modeling instrument in Orchestral composition (Let's say : 4 French Horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones) I experience some cracks when I listent to the project.

But when in addition I use Audiobro LASS (in full orchestra mode), the project still accept to play, but the cracks and noise are just crazy.

Using Lass alone goes smooth as well.. it's really the using of the 2 together which get crazy.

I ended up using one kontakt instance for each instrument.. but still quite lot of noise.

So as I know SM and LASS are quite "hungry" in CPU usage, did I just reached the limit of what my computer can handle ? Or did I missed some important tweaking somewhere ??

If some of you use SM instruments and LASS and don't experience problems could you tell me help me to see what's wrong here ?

I know I can bounce to audio some stuff etc, but I would prefer to keep that freedom to work with the VST as long as possible.

thanks a lot

Seb

Sound like computer/DAW setup issue. Some strategies to resolve:

    1. increasing buffer size for sound card in DAW

    2. If it is running Windows, disabling any unneeded services and all power saving features of CPU (e.g. Speedstep)

    3. Trying more efficient DAW like Reaper (I used to have lots of issues with Cubase)

    4. Freezing tracks of demanding instruments

    Hello thanks for answer.

    I did point 1 & 2

mmm would like to avoid to change DAW as I have my real workflow on it

I guess I only have to use freeze more now, hoped this processor could handle more :(

    Thanks anyway !

For "offline" usage (i.e. no live playback of the audio or midi data just received) the "buffers" or "latency" setting is absolutely not critical. With enough Latency, your high-end machine should have absolutely no problem playing your project.

BTW: if you use a low latency setup (for live playing), you need to tweak Windows for realtime purpose.

BTW/2: some hours ago I demonstrated Reaper to a friend of mine (we did an 8 Track recording of our band with his hardware: 16 cannels ADAT/Firewire and a 6 years old Laptop). He is an experienced Cubase user. He immediately purchased a Reaper license. Does anybody want to buy a Cubase dongle ?

    mmm

I'm starting to think this has nothing to do with CPU...

I did tweaked in the past the latency (buffer size etc) but I didn't check the cpu usage then because the noises were still there...

So, When I put the buffer size back to 256, the first core usage barely reach 40% and the other 11 cores around 10 or 15%

But the cracks are crazy it's like I hear crazy digital saturation, but all the audio meters are good far from red...

    I just don't get it :?

    Hi,

I recorded quickly with a sm52 the sound I get with the crazy noise, there are 3 WAV :

with both LASS & SAmple modeling ON

    with LASS muted

    With Sample Modeling muted

and as you can hear :

with both the result is crazy noise

with lass only : very few cracks at low volume

with sample modeling : more cracks but far from the craziness of the first wav

and if I bounce the whole project, it sounds great, not a single crack.

I don't think it's related to CPU usage, but I have no clue what it could be.

it's sounds a bit like digital overload but I have red nowhere...

This really suggests that the DAW does not appropriately handle latency.

You definitively should try Reaper. Same even is supposed to be able to attach another instance of Reaper on a second PC via Ethernet, running VSTs there (thus huge and variable latency), and still do playback.-
