HARMONICA?

edited June 2017 in General Questions
Hello!

Given the success with the range of instruments, it would be nice to have a harmonica in the arsenal.

I know you will not say whether or not it part of the plan, but I thought I'd drop this here.

Thank you, and congratulations!

I'd certainly buy this if SM ever released it.

Me too. SM Chromatic harmonica would be amazing to have in my toolkit.

    Do you think of this:

    or maybe this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melodica

We (band) just are practicing a song by Sting that features a Solo supposedly done by a chromatic harmonica. We plan using a (real) soprano sax for this, but a virtual harmonica would be nice, as well.

Anyway, a Harmonica or Melodica can do chords. So playing with a keyboard plus Breath controller seems very appropriate, and so I feel nudged to contribute :D. As I can't (seriously) play the harmonica (even though I seem too remember that a chromatic one is sitting somewhere on some shelf), I'm no expert at all, but I'd like to say that I suppose a decent algorithm to handle chords would be critical.

No reason why you couldn't use midiChords to provide the chords even if they weren't built in, so you could use a windcontroller or keyboard playing single notes. I think the hardest thing for SM to provide would be a way to get realistic in/out breath effects.

SampleModeling is excellent in doing software that provides realistic in/out breath effects. So no need to worry :) .

The chords (multiple simultaneous tones) might offer a different challenge.

Physically, multiple reeds closely together being blown by the same source of wind, will do some intermodulation, as the wind pressure for one reed is not steady but modulated by the other reeds.

Moreover with the blues harp, only certain types of chords can be produced and needs to be automatically converted from the midi notes. E.g. the original instrument eve can't do real single line melodies, you always have intermediate "chords". The chromatic button needs dedicated attention as well with the notes selection (the virtual button position needs to be automatically detected from the pressed keyboard notes and creates "wrong" intermediate notes), as with the special attack and "slide" it produces. Moreover doing the typical extremely close and "nasty" Microphone sound an the hand position "wahwa" modulation will be "interesting".
