English Horn and Oboe Sound Samples
I've uploaded some music that features the new English Horn and the Oboe. Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of good Classical accompaniment, so I just used some not so great midi accompaniment for the Anna Magdelena piece, and some BnBox accompaniment for the non Classical pieces. It's all done with EWI-4000s with Vibrato on CC2.

I think both Instruments sound pretty good once you tweak them and practice enough to get closer to the sound you want. With the EWI, I find that, each instrument (Trumpet, Tuba, Saxophone etc.) requires a very different approach (mechanics of attack, airflow etc. ) and it takes time to learn how to make each instrument sound best.

Did you try one of the the harpsichords by pianoteq ? I feel these modeling instruments would go great to the SampleModeling winds.

What you say about the SM instruments is so true but it is also true about any acoustic instrument - each a very different personality with a learning curve attached which can be much steeper at the beginning, middle or end.
If you have not already, check out what Jean-Luc Fillon is doing with the EH and Oboe in the jazz world.

What works best for me is to pick a favorite musician playing the real instrument and playing with that musician music while tweaking the instrument and also to try and learn some instrument-specific licks and attack style.
I also noticed that some tweaks improve specific octaves, so preset for ballad on low register might need to be a bit different than preset for playing the high register of the instrument (harmonic structure and formants adjustments especially in SWAM).
The Pianoteq pianos and harpsichords sound fantastic. I would love to use them but I'm not much of a piano player and therefore I'm not sure how I could make use of it with any midi versions of songs that I might be able to find.
Wish I could play piano well enough to create my own accompaniment or just play for the fun of it.

Good point about acoustic instruments. I agree and should have stated that prior to comments on virtual instruments. I'll have to listen to Jean-Luc Fillon to see what he sounds like with the Oboe and English horn.

It's always great to hear your comments on these things.
I rather like your idea of using a favorite musician for playalong in order to get the sound and feel of that person. I guess I've done that myself in the past.
As for tweaking the register harmonic structure, I'm afraid my ears are, at this point, not sufficiently good to hear the subtle changes when I change some of these more advanced parameters in SWAM.
