Brass Spatial/ER/Verb test, Harry Potter music.
I was testing out a combination of VirtualSoundStage and 2CAudio's B2 reverb to get a good room sound for my SM brass, and I decided to quickly do a test with what Harry Potter music I remembered off the top of my head.
I would appreciate any comments, criticisms, and suggestions. Even if this is a spatial test, the comment can be about my playing of the VSTis.
Horn 1,2,3,4
Trumpet 1,2,3
Trombone 1,2
Bass Trombone
I'm also including the naked version for comparison.
EDIT: more info:
3 instances of B2. ER for horns, ER for trumpets&trombones, tail for everything. All are through sends.
Trumpets and trombones have close mics, ER reverb is set to 100% wet. Horns are pre-faded and volume knobs are turned all the way down, but ER wetness is set to 70%.
VirtualSoundStage is demo version, I used the Sample Modeling Brass presets they included.

I think your main problem is the same as everyone encounters with dry close samples : how to really wet the sound. Your placement is quite good, but you lack one more thing IMO : you need to alter the sound itself. You see, in a real hall, high frequencies have a tendancy to disappear quickly over lenght (that's why a far away thunder is only growling and have no trebles). You should try to remove some high frequencies on your brass section, it might darken the sound a little bit and help push them back in the stage.
As for me, i use the TILT filters of SERTI and FORTI, from numerical sounds. Quite expensive, but useful.
If you send me your midi file, i could play it with my own setup, we could compare.
I was thinking exactly the same thing, but whenever I use the EQ in Cubase, I always get dismal results.
Here are the MIDI files, I just realized that 2nd trombone doesn't do anything in this, so there's no need to load the tenor trombone 2 patch.
NOTE: I don't have an expression pedal, dynamic control is CC1 (modulation) rather than CC11 (expression). I switched the controls for all my instruments, so to work with these I think you'd have to as well. Sorry for the trouble!
Plus it might help to attenuate the high freq (>8k) a little more?
