VirtualSoundStage
Hi everyone ! Just wanted to talk about some "Mir pro cheap alternative" that seems promising.
I didn't try it out yet, but i wanted to know if some of you already use it.

It seems to me that, for 100 euros, it's the perfect match for the sample modeling "supadry" instruments.
What do you think ?

- it dosn´t work well wenn placing the instruments directly in front (will be fixed in an update)
- it only has one room (and you can´t adjust the charasteristisc of that one very much)
- it does not add tail so you´ll need another little plugin for the "hall" (the valhalla plugs are good and low priced)
The Vienna thing would be a way but i personally don´t like the sound of it too much and it´s very expensive (VSL-like).
Check out Altiverb. It has plenty of excellent rooms (and new ones are added every few weeks for free (hello, VSL)) and you can easily place your signals within the room via the stage positioning tool (you can also adjust the size of every IR, alter the dynamics of the direct signal, early reflection and tail or combine several instances to create a room that does not exist in reality but matches your needs).
It costs 5 times more than the VSS but is 500 times mightier (did i mention that there are plenti of great tails included as well so you´ll only need this one plugin).
(It uses more CPU than the VSS, though. Shouldn´t be a problem on newer computers)
Hope that helps,
patrick
I found it great to quickly put all instruments in one room, when you insert it on master track. It doesn't add color and long echoes like the fancy expensive ones, but I prefer that natural sound and it is lite on resources enough to be used for live playing or seperate setup of each track (put each track in same room in a different position).

Looks like i'm just gonna stick with my own setup for now (I use vienna hybrid reverb (ER + algorythmic tail) + TILT filters to alter the timbre of instruments and push them away).
I did one test with VSS, and it was less convincing than what I already have.

space360 is wonderful! get it! though it has only 32bit, I personally had to Jbridge it.
Well...I'd suggest trying the demo. I didn't like the sound of MIR either but then when I tried the free demo license and realized how tweak-able everything is, suddenly I fell in love with it. So much control, it's really pretty fantastic. And it responds exactly the way a real hall would, so the sound is just natural and realistic in a way that hours and hours of tweaking just can't approximate.
Anyway back to the original topic, VSS is useful but it also doesn't really add any color to the sound, it just places it. It's an extremely useful plugin. I haven't used SM instruments with it so I couldn't tell you how it would sound with them, but they too have a free demo on the parallax site so again, give it a try.
I just used Space360 for a real Sax in a multi track recording. Works really great to add a decent "distance" to the recording that had been done with a clip micro attached to the horn. Works just great ! (I'm going to send you a the sound file in a private mail.)
The only "funny" thing I found is that the two virtual loudspeakers are not sending each a channels of the input signal (that is correctly handled by the "Direct" control) but both send the same signal that is the sum of the input signal.
Anyway, to create the sound of a single instrument in a room, both speakers would be located to the same place. It would be great if there would be an option to use only one "speaker". But it seems that Cytosonic is not active since 2012, so requests don't make sense.
In the Reaper Forum I was told:
"(Also, i know another plugin which should be out soon, and which works great for such kind of effect, but it isn't released yet...)"
I'll keep you posted.

Happily Reaper has a built-in 32 bit Bridge

They both do the job very well in locating instruments on a virtual sound stage, producing ERs and modulating the EQ that is appropriate for the positioning.
Especially good to separate and distinguish 1st and 2nd instruments such as Flutes, Clarinets ad Oboes.
Of course I need to turn off the reverb in SWAM and use the VSS or MIR ERs plus another reverb such as a Hall, especially if mixing with other (non-SWAM) instruments.
