playing softly

Hi everyone,

I just started using the horns and I can't figure out how to make them them play softly. It seems like they're always blaring. I'm referring to the tone, not the volume. If I turn the volume down, it still sounds like they're blaring. This is true with either the keyboard or the EWI USB. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

  • If I turn the volume down, it still sounds like they're blaring.

Could it be that you confuse "volume" with "expression" (or "dynamics")? It looks like you expect a different tone when you turn the volume down. This is , however, not the case. The volume does not influence the timbre related to the dynamic level. It´s CC11 (or CC2) which controlls the dynamics, thus the timbre. For soft playing it´s absolutely necessary to provide CC11 (or CC2) at about 10 - 20 to play pianissimo.

If you wish to use CC7 (volume controller) to control the dynamics, please do not forget to remap it to "expression" using the remapping menu. (Please make sure that in this case CC7 does not control the output volume at the same time; the right setting can be found in the instrument options -> Controller, deactivating the option "Accept standard controllers for Volume and Pan", which is normally deactivated anyway)

If you cannot solve it, please send us an example sequence (as .mid file) including your expression track and demonstrating the problem.

Thank you for the reply, Peter. It turned out that I just had to change the selection in Kontakt to Wind Controller and then click the button "Use Wind Controller". My only problem now is getting notes to fade out more completely (descrescendo). It cuts off earlier than expected as I lower my breath pressure. Maybe this has more to do with the sensitivity of the EWI USB. Or, is there a setting within the program I can change for that?
  • The fact that the tone stops earlier than you want must be due to some EWI settings. Apparently EWI generates a note-off command, because in the Wind Controller mode the Horns play even if CC2 = 0 (of course the note must not be stopped). Please check your EWI settings...

I can confirm that the EWI (usb, at least) sends "note" messages. But only note on.

"note off" messages from the ewi are "note on" with velocity at 0.

All midi note offs are note on with velocity 0

Nope. "note off" is normally beginning with 8 (8n.xx.yy), while notes on begins with a 9 (9n.xx.yy). But maybe note on with 0 vel is more often used, i don't own every single keyboard on the market ^^
