Horn Ensemble vs. multiple solo Horns

edited March 2012 in General Questions
Having been playing with the Horns and Tuba this afternoon, I am really liking them. I just a have a quick question about the 4 Horn Ensemble instrument.

I would prefer to play the lines in for 4 solo Horns, rather than using the ensemble patch. Apart from panning and reverb, are there any differences that I should be aware of, when working this way, to get the best result?

  • Hi Daryl,

we provide 4 main French Horns, each one with a slightly different timbre, ER IR, and overall response to the MIDI flow. The early reflections are built in such a way to minimize phasing. Each instrument has a different pitch and dynamics modulation. When driven from different MIDI tracks, they will provide best result.

The additional four (for unison ensemble) FH exploit the ensemble maker algorithm, ensuring that the timing of each note will be different for each instrument even if driven from a single midi track. Please note that best results in term of CPU load will always be obtained by using a separate instance of Kontakt for each instrument. In case the Multi does not meet your need, you can create something similar using the (for unison ensemble) instruments on separate instances of Kontakt.

Thanks. That all seems to make sense to me. So assuming that I want to use 4 tracks, rather than 1, do I need to use the Ensemble solo Horns, and will they provide a different experience to using the normal 4 Horns? Does that make any sense at all?

I guess that my preference would be to load 4 separate tracks and use them both for individual lines and ensemble lines. What is the best way to do this, do you think?

Thanks for the information so far.
