Soprano Sax and trumpet (Miles to go)

edited January 2012 in User demos
Hi all - here is a piece i did after i first got Ms Soprano before Xmas. I was hoping to see a lot more demos from everyone who bought it before i sent mine in. So this is a big hint!

The piece is called Miles to Go - with many possible meanings like Wayne Shorter was one of my favourite Soprano sax players and he played with Miles Davis at some point. Sample Modelling has done such a great job on this!

This song was entirely done on a MAC system with Digital Performer DAW on a keyboard. A wind controller would be nice though as MS S is such a strong solo instrument.

The piece features the soprano but the trumpet is also in the last half with Ms S. Any suggestions on any aspect are always welcome!

Thanks - Del

  • Hi Del,

very convincing solos, thank you! Did you perform it on your keyboard "simply like that", or was a lot of "tweaking" in the sequencer necessary?..

Thank you for sharing it with us!

Thanks for the feedback. As you can tell everything is quite improvised and generally i am able to get things on the first or second take. In a sense, for this piece the solos were the easy part, getting the other instruments (piano, bass and drums) to work was the biggest challenge as this piece is more free form and a bit further out there than what i am used to.

However, i generally go in and fix up any midi mistakes on the soprano or the trumpet or if something does not quite work. i might tweak it a little much like someone with notation app would. I generally redraw the expression data as i find i don't get great results with my Yamaha expression pedal. It is not that smooth and I find not that easy to use. I think foot pedals are harder. For some reason the controller tends to only start around 60 of 0-127. I can't seem to get the pedal to go below 60 so i tend to redraw in the DAW program (which does not take too long) If anyone has any ideas on this pedal it would be appreciated. I am very tempted to try a wind controller though as i do play a real flute and trumpet.

I might also tweak the modulation as well but i seem to have more success with the mod wheel. Getting the right amount of expression and modulation at the right place at the right time is still a big challenge but i will get there.

I really like the soprano and find it easy to play out of the box - that said, i still need a lot of practice with it to really develop it's true potential. As they say, practice makes perfect!

Sample Modelling has done it again! And then some!
