88.2 rate for Macs

edited July 2009 in General Questions
Hi!

Do the new Mac Pros & laptops have the 88.2 sample rate that is needed for the saxes? Built in?

My logic board died today and I want to make sure I get this right as I need a new computer. Cannot seem to find any info on the Apple site.

Thanks in advance!

Is there no info on the soundcards that are in the new Macs? Worst case...you'd just need to add a better soundcard. Although, I'm sure the mid- to upper macs would be sufficient. I have an older Mac Pro. I added a M-Audio Delta 1010LT. It goes up to 96k. It was decently priced but if you want to go nuts, you can always go for a Lynx (192k) or something else really high-end. It depends on what you need.

the sample rate depends on the audio card only. If the card has the option of 88.2 kHz, it will work on any multicore computer.

If the card is for Samplemodeling only, there is no need for an expensive card with high-end microphone inputs and converters. A fairly cheap one will do, and today most cards work with 44.1 up to 96 kHz.

I think the OP was asking about Apple's built-in sound for the MacBook Pros. I use a 2007 model MacBook Pro and am on OSX 10.5.7 and mine works at 44.1khz, 48kHz, and 96kHz. Not 88.1kHz, the sampling rate ideal for the Saxophones.

    Unfortunate.

I use the Prism Orpheus most of the time and that works at any of the sampling rates (it may even go up to 384kHz, although I've never tried it.)

well, internal cards are not recommended anyway. To get most out of any virtual instrument, one should get an external card I believe.

And I also believe that 96 kHz is good for the saxes, the libraries can played back at 88.2 like this.
