Unwanted growly sounds...

edited February 2009 in Windcontrollers
First of all, a huge thankyou for Mr. Sax T. I've been sitting with it for days (since I bought it) - it just makes me want to play.

I'm using an EWI 4000s and today I started looking for settings that would make the musical experience even more satisfying. I went into the EWI's Breath Sensor Output and enabled Velocity data. This activated Mr Sax's Velocity setting in the Column Bars.

Result: a wonderful subtlety is added to the playing. But also an unwanted side effect.

On touching the EWI's Pitch Bend down area the sound does indeed slide down. But a growly type sound is added. It doesn't quite sound like the normal Mr Sax growl but it is close (actually I wonder if it's an extreme growl with value 127). The sound becomes more annoying when pitch bending the higher notes.

Kontakt's Growl C21 remains at 0.

I added CC21 output to the EWI's glide strip - touching that makes the Growl C21 number go 58.

Then I put a piece of software called MIDI-OX between EWI and Mr. Sax. It's main purpose to read all data passing from the EWI. On touching the glide strip it shows CC21 being sent. But on Pitch Bend down sent it only sees Breath, Expression and Pitch Bend.

Any ideas on what sound I'm hearing on Pitch Bend? When I disable EWI's Velocity data send, Pitch Bend stays but the growly sound goes.

If I disable CC send for the glide strip, as far as I'm aware the EWI is not sending any CC21 messages.

Thanks

Darrell

How do you send control messages with the glide strip? My EWI has at GL (glide) settings only r (rate) or (time) as a choice. I have the system software 2.3. Maybe this is new on 2.4, which I did not install yet? If you have system 2.4 installed can you tell us if it is a good thing to install? 2.3 works without giving problems. I did read the new release notes: nothing about glide strip controller. Also once update you can not go back to 2.3, so I am careful with installing this version.

I'm still at 2.3 too, and equally wary of 2.4.

Did it through the setting Po (which is Portamento).

It's described on page 26 of the latest manual under Glide Plate Functions.

I'm also getting a growl sound when I play with the wind controller but not with the keyboard. A "P. Growl" message appears on the Sax GUI when I play with the wind controller. What causes the "P. Growl" message and sound? Anyone have experience with this?

probably you're sending Controller 64 or sustain pedal messages.

EDIT: in case you don't know it, there's a handy little MIDI message display called Midi checker:

You're right on, Phil. I forgot my software was set to send sustain on slur (for a different sample library). Thanks!
